Hello Gardener,
Welcome to Emerald Gardens Newsletter Pride of Barbados
Caesalpinia pulcherrima is a semi tropical plant originating in the West Indies or South America. Because of cultivation it has spread around the tropical world and can be found from India to South America.
It is the national flower of Barbados and its name pulcherrima literally means "very pretty". A member of the pea family there are 70 known species of Caesalpinia but only a few are seen in temperate areas. This is a full sun plant that will bloom 8-10" clusters of bright orange -red flowers from early summer till fall.
Very drought tolerant and fast growing as well as deer resistant makes this a great choice for hill country gardens. By its second year it can reach a size of 6'x6' so allow plenty of space for this plant. It freezes to the ground in Austin and will re-sprout around April or when it gets hot. This is one of the best dry area plants for butterflies and hummingbirds and can grow in very poor soil. It can be stunning combined with Esparanza, Texas Sage, Rosemary and Salvias in a large bed.
Woolly Butterfly Bush
This Texas native is notorious for attracting butterflies and bees with orbs of tiny, bright orange flowers. It is also a type of Buddleia, like its purple counterpart, butterfly bush. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and, being a native, it requires little maintenance. In fact, it does best left alone since over-watering can damage the plant. The "woolly" silver foliage adds color and texture to the garden and the flowers bloom from summer through fall. It makes a great addition to Xeriscape gardens, or as an accent plant in a sunny flower bed.
Baby Quail are at Emerald
For a limited time we are hatching baby cortunix quail. Come see the babies and watch as they grow. Bring the kids to watch and gently hold one. They are really cute.
Gold Creeping Jenny
Bright shinny leaves help this plant to brighten up any shaded pond. Creeping jenny is not just for shade, it grows quite well in full sun due to the pond waters cooling effects and can be added to upright marginal plants as a filler. It is a very efficient filter plant and is useful growing in bio-filters.It is easily propagated by cuttings and very fast growing but also very easily removed where not wanted. The stems ands leaves will float just at or beneath the water surface when planted in a submerged pot and will grow feeder roots all down the stem. Planted on a waterfall or stream bed it will run and cascade very nicely. Be sure to keep it trimmed where it may impede or change your water flow. Creeping jenny works equally well as a landscape plant in part sun to shade and is very good for mixed containers. Topiaries filled with moss will cover quickly with jenny and look bright and whimsical.
