Hello Gardener,
Welcome to Emerald Gardens Newsletter

Water Shade Trees

Shade trees of all types are dying around town including oaks that are hundreds of years old. Water your newly planted trees three times a week to prevent loss. It has been a year since any significant rain and trees that have never been at risk before are fading fast. Save your water for the trees and ration the lawn if you have an option. Grass is much cheaper to replace and will establish quickly where with trees many years of growth can be lost. Saving your trees will help save water down the road and is the most environmental us for your precious water. Do not over water drought stressed trees or tired roots can be damaged. A thorough soaking every three to four weeks will do great for old established or native trees. I have had to water a Native Texas Madrone on my property that has never had water, or risk losing a 12" specimen that has most likely been around for at least a couple hundred years and it is still in jeopardy.

Plant profile
New on the market are Grafted Crepe Myrtles.
Using vigorous Muskogee Crepe as a rootstock and strong trunk growers have grafted 4 feet up a miniature Crepe Myrtle like Baton Rouge or New Orleans (which weeps).
The result is a straight, strong trunk and a crepe myrtle top that is tight and uniform and stays about 3' across without major pruning. They grow well in a container due to there smaller size and can be kept for as long as you want.
These will make a very unique and durable patio tree or specimen that wont block the front of the house from view and will bloom all summer.

Gear up for Fall !

Fall veggies are ready to plant and should get in the ground while its hot to be ready for harvest this fall. For great plants work in fresh compost and amendments like Hu-more manure compost and coco fiber to loosen soils and retain water. Soil improvement is the secrete ingredient in successful gardens. Start to day because planting time is here for cabbage , broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collards, lettuce, radishes, spinach, onions and many more cool season crops. Plant some from seed indoors and move out when the time is right and plant some from starters available this week and more varieties as fall goes on. Fall Vegetables are a great choice for water conservation and most are fairly drought tolerant once the heat ends.
Don't forget to plant broccoli and other head type crops on a staggered basis so you can harvest fresh every 2-3 weeks. Just buy new transplants every 2 weeks until your spot is filled and at harvest time all your veggies don't have to be eaten at once. Use Medina Hasta Gro for the best plants you can grow. It is very effect on seasonal crops and cant be beat for a Texas made Nutrient.

Roses
Grow extremely well when planted in the fall and we have a great selection of roses, from Hybrid tea roses and antiques to Knockouts. Tough plants after this summer, most are blooming and look great, all are good size. Buy them now for 50 % OFF until October 15th. (That is when they will start to get their flush for fall)
